St Kilda Esplanade Market
Not only an icon of St Kilda and Melbourne, the St Kilda Esplanade Market is a world-renowned art and craft makers’ haven. In its idyllic beachside location, the market has been the place of choice for those seeking high-quality and authentic Australian products, since 1970.
Before it grew into a landmark destination in the City of Port Phillip, the St Kilda Esplanade Market used to be called The Art Bank. In December 1970, Cr. Manning understood the high expense of holding an art exhibition. As a result, he asked several artists and sculptors if they would display their work at the Esplanade, and the St Kilda Esplanade Market was born.
The growth of an artistic platform
Australian artistic treasures James Egan and Ruth Epps were amongst the first collection of artists to showcase their works at the Esplanade Market. They were soon joined by potters, leatherworkers and other craftspeople, birthing the vibrant culture that’s still on the Esplanade almost 50 years later.
While initially showcasing locals, the Esplanade Market has attracted stallholders from all over Melbourne, where today over 250 stalls can now be visited.
Even Academy Award winning animator Adam Elliot (of Harvey Krumpet fame) sold his hand painted t-shirts there for five years.
Our longest-running stalls
Calypso Flash’s jewellery stall has been with the Market for 49 years, beginning their relationship with the Esplanade a mere six months after the market opened in 1970.
Domingo Jewellery and Neville King Furniture have also contributed to the Market for 49 years, showcasing the storied history of this St Kilda landmark and its stallholders.
A part of St Kilda history
The Market has developed into an exciting platform for new artists beginning their careers, either going to other opportunities or staying at the market for many years.
Bringing in food vendors in 2016 to enhance the experience, the St Kilda Esplanade Market has gained iconic status as a Melbourne landmark. The Market has been an important part of St Kilda’s vibrant culture for 49 years, and will continue to do so for years to come.
