Top 4 family activities for Summer
Summer in Melbourne can be chaotic at the best of times – even more so with the kids in tow. This year give the shopping madness a miss and instead enjoy our top four family activities in the City of Port Phillip.
1. Stand-up paddle-boarding on the bay
Slip, slop and slap and hit St Kilda beach for some stand-up paddle-boarding fun. Splash in the water and have a blast with the family, renting or taking a stand-up paddle-boarding (SUP) class in St Kilda.
Kite Republic is a great pick to try the activity for the first time. And don’t worry, it’s suitable for people of all ages. If paddle-boarding isn’t your style, grab a towel, umbrella and have a relaxed beach session instead. The kids will be over the moon, either way.

2. Hit a park or playground
Summer beckons with ideal picnic weather, and in the City of Port Phillip there are plenty of mighty trees to seek shade under. Take the family and have a picnic in the park at the Botanical Gardens.
If a more daring parkland is your style, head over to Adventure Playground for a kid’s paradise. It’s got everything from trampolines to a go-kart path, climbing frame, flying fox and more.
3. Kid-friendly rides at Luna Park
Luna Park is an iconic St Kilda amusement park that makes the ideal summer destination. And this summer, it’s got some new tricks up its sleeve. Three new kid-friendly rides to be exact!
For the Park’s 106th summer season, its latest children’s rides include:
- Moon Balloons – be lifted to the skies with this mini Ferris wheel
- Speedy Beetle – spin and slide on the mini roller coaster
- Betty Choo Choo – hop onboard this new trackless train for a ride around the Park.

4. Enter the Rain Room at The Jackalope Pavilion
The Rain Room is a worldwide sensation that has taken the world by storm. And it’s now making its debut at St Kilda’s Jackalope Pavilion.
People of all ages can enter a darkened 100 square metre room filled with non-stop rainfall. But here’s the kicker: you won’t feel a drop. The mysteriously responsive environment engages all the senses and allows visitors to walk around the room immersed in rainfall, yet completely dry.
This is done by motion sensors that detect your every move to create a six-metre protection around guests. This one is a sight to behold and a great one for kids, parents and grandparents.
