The (Magnum) Queens of South Melbourne wine
Virginia Selleck and Kirsten Dickie’s wine store Magnum + Queens has gone from a successful online store to a local hotspot with their bricks and mortar store on Coventry Street.
A mere stone throw from the South Melbourne Market, Selleck and Dickie have now expanded their services for locals to come and have a drink in store.
Dickie is now happy with the feel of the bottle shop exactly as her and Selleck had envisaged from the start – with a strong local presence.
Welcoming and sophisticated: a space for all
Magnum + Queens invites you to browse well-lit wine shelves, while a small table in the middle of the space is ripe for drinking. It gives you an immediate feeling of warmth, without bordering on discriminatory sophistication.
Dickie and Selleck worked with designers from Collingwood-based Studio Studio to create an interior that Dickie describes as “a space we would like to be in.”
After acquiring their liquor licence, Magnum + Queens has now become a South Melbourne hotspot as an inexpensive, casual and local-centric drinking venue.
“It can be incredibly expensive to drink out now so to be able to grab a bottle off the shelf and drink in-store or have a glass and take the rest home is a great option,” Dickie said.
“It had always been our plan to have a small number of seats for people to drop in, have a glass of wine and take a bottle home.”
A selection of rare and extensive wine
Dickie highlights Selleck’s experience as a sommelier in some of Melbourne’s top restaurants, a vital key to Magnum + Queens catering to a wide range of tastes.
“We have rare and hard to find Burgundy’s and Barolos; fun and interesting minimal intervention wines and everyday quaffers to take home. It’s about wines for all occasions that we think offer quality and value,” Dickie said.
Wines by the bottle have a $10 corkage, unless over $60 when they’re at shelf price.
Not only just for wine lovers, beer drinkers have a nice selection to choose from too, including Boatrocker sours, and 3 Raven’s Juicy IPA.
Delicious Comté is on offer with quince jam and crackers, while other snacks include Ortiz anchovies and pickled onions, deliciously paired with whatever tipple you choose.
A versatile events space
Magnum + Queens has also opened the space for small wine tastings for groups of up to 20, with other larger stand up events proving a favourite among locals.
“One of the most popular is the ‘Rise of New Wine Varietals’. It is an exploration of new and interesting varietals being made in Australia which Virginia and our sommeliers run,” Dickie said.
Run over an hour with six wines to taste and a full charcuterie selection for accompaniment, events like these are bringing locals back for more.
What’s next for Magnum + Queens?
While Dickie is looking towards expanding the Magnum + Queens Australia-wide with new stores around the country (watch this space for Sydney in 2020), the focus is still firmly on growing with the South Melbourne community.
“For our store, the local community is the key success to the store. We want it to be a fun casual space without the pretentious wine side you get in a lot of bars and wine stores.
It’s how we like to go out, so we have really just tried to create a place that we would want to go to,” Dickie said.
