It’s not too early to start getting excited about this year’s South Melbourne Night Market. If you’re looking for things to do in South Melbourne, make sure the South Melbourne Night Market is at the top of your list. For eight dazzling Thursday nights, beneath the verandahs between Cecil and Coventry, the street becomes filled with sparkling lights, the smells of delicious food, the sounds of live music, and the bustling of many a happy market goer. From long before sunset and on into the balmy night, you can come to peruse the stalls for unique clothing, jewelry, crafts, and artwork, and sample cuisine from all over the word. There is entertainment for kids and adults alike, and no two weeks are quite the same. So if you’re in South Melbourne looking for things to do, here’s a little run down of what you can expect at the South Melbourne Night Market in 2019.
Things To do at the South Melbourne Night Market
Every week, you’ll be able to enjoy one, or even two, live music bands during the evening at the market. Entry to live music is always free and suitable for all ages. The selection of music is extremely diverse and wonderful ranging from the likes of Sorrento Moons chilled alternative Electronica on the 10th of Jan, to Leonie Kingdom’s Indie Folk on the 24th, Malcura’s Latin Rock n’ roll on the 31st and Immy Owusu’s afro rock on the 21st of Feb, and so many more.
In addition to live music, you can choose to take part in a 30-minute cooking class! For $15 per person, an esteemed chef will teach you how to make a signature dish such as Vietnamese rice flour dumplings in banana leaves, gnocchi with mushroom and sage, or even sticky coconut rice parcels with caramelised pineapple and more. Some classes run three times a night but it’s a good idea to book in. Whichever chef is on each night will walk you through the steps they take to prepare the meal and everyone will be able to sample the dish and take home the recipe to try yourself. You’ll also get a $10 voucher at The Market to find all the necessary ingredients.
The South Melbourne Night Market proudly hosts an array of market stall holders and small businesses with an extensive range of creative products and services. You can receive an intricate henna tattoo, have a personalised bunch of flowers made at the Florist, or even receive a tarot card reading to get some life perspective. You’ll be able to shop from small designers and edgy fashion lines, jewelry crafted from clay or made into sacred geometry, or raw and uncut semi-precious crystal rings. You’ll be able to find ethically made Moroccan leather bags, unbreakable silicone wine glasses with funky patterns, all things biking and skating, and even pet and aquarium supplies! Have a read through carefully selected used books, marvel at lovingly made terrariums, browse recycled and repurposed homewares, and so much more. The South Melbourne Night market is the perfect place to enjoy stress-free shopping and meandering after the Holiday chaos has long faded into the distance.
If you only come to the market for one reason, it can definitely be for the food, although you will have your work cut out for you when trying to narrow it down. It might be best to come for all eight weeks of the market and try something new each time. Better yet, share with friends and try a few things at once! You’ll be able to choose from popular restaurants like Claypots, Koy, Bambu Asian Hawker food, Billy Van Creamery, Ghost Kitchen and several others. You might try some Mexican ice cream, the 100% not-for-profit crepes, mini donuts, Taiwanese food, Greek street food, Happy Camper Pizza served from the 1960’s airstream, or some vegan treats and coffee from La Lapa cafe. Walk around and sample the vibrant cuisine and have a go at something new!
