Oktoberfest by the beach
Can’t get to the famed Munich beer halls this year for Oktoberfest? There’s no need to fly all the way to Bavaria when you can don your best lederhosen or dirndl in the beautiful Catani Gardens in St Kilda instead.
On Saturday 26 October, Oktoberfest St Kilda will be the home of everything Bavarian – from beers to good beats and even better food.
Oktoberfest: Some quick facts
Oktoberfest has quickly become one of the highlights of the year for beer and fun-loving Australians – but what’s it all about?
Held annually in Munich, the Bavarian capital, Oktoberfest is attended by upwards of six million people every year – it’s the largest Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair) in the world.
Traditionally a folk festival, Oktoberfest celebrations can be traced all the way back to 1810. This long history means that the event still celebrates many of the things close to every good Bavarian’s heart – traditional garb, lively tunes, gourmet German cuisine, and of course, millions of litres of beer.
Be ready to be Bavarian
If you’ve never been to an Oktoberfest celebration before, you’re in for a real treat. To get the most out of the day, be prepared to show off your inner Bavarian with full force. You can do this by:
- Dressing to impress – For the guys this means getting into your best lederhosen (think traditional suspenders, shirt and hiking hat). Ladies are encouraged to wear their favourite dirndl, featuring flattering bodices, full skirts and aprons. You can acquire the finest Oktoberfest attire from Miss Kitty’s in St Kilda
- Drinking big – During Oktoberfest, beer is traditionally served in whopping 1-litre steins. Don’t forget to swap “cheers” for “prost” on the day!
- Having a yodel – Oktoberfest celebrates the traditional sounds of the Bavarian countryside. This means you may have the opportunity to join in a yodel or lively beer hall song.
