Local hero: Colonial Brewing Co (Jarrod Stivala)
This month’s Local Hero, Jarrod Stivala, hails from Colonial Brewing Co. In his role as Brewery Operations Manager, Jarrod has overseen Colonial’s expansion to Melbourne from their original location in Margaret River, Western Australia.
Under Jarrod's watch, Colonial Brewing Co has become a Port Melbourne standout. Since taking up the role in 2015, Jarrod has focused on delivering more of what Colonial is known for: a great atmosphere and even better brews and food to match. We spoke to Jarrod about his story, and his favourite parts of the City of Port Phillip.
Jarrod, tell us about yourself
“Before I started working with Colonial Leisure/Brewing, I lived in London for several years. I eventually moved back home and started working at the Portsea Hotel as the Assistant Senior Venue Manager.
After four years at Portsea I ran the original Colonial Brewery in Margaret River. The opportunity came up to move back to Melbourne as the Brewery Operations Manager and launch our Port Melbourne expansion.”
What are your favourite places in the City of Port Phillip?
“My favourite spots on Bay Street are the excellent Glenda Pho Cafe and The Chicken Bar. I love taking my nephews to The Chicken Bar and watching the ships come to shore, over some chicken and chips.
I also love going to The Railway Hotel for a steak, and Hats & Tatts is great for a beer (outside of Colonial, of course).”
What do you love most about the area?
“I love the beach town vibe, while still being so close to the city – it’s the perfect balance. Around the brewery we’ve been able to meet and be a part of a great local community. Whether it’s hanging with our boozy brethren at Starward Distillery, making our daily visit to caffeine providers Coe & Coe, or checking in with the barbers at Uncle Rocco’s who keep us looking presentable – we feel like we’re a part of a thriving community.”
What are your hopes for the area?
“Hopefully we’ll see the area continue to evolve with more late-night and entertainment options. I’d love to see another live music venue pop up, and a specialised craft beer bar would be excellent.”
