A summer’s day in Albert Park

Summer’s here, and that means more days out and about, rather than being stuck inside. Albert Park has plenty for you to check out from morning till night and is a great destination in the warmer weather.

To see exactly what could be done on a summer’s day, we’ve planned out what you may want to experience from sunrise to well past sunset in exciting Albert Park.
Things to do in Albert Park

9:30 am – A workout and refuel

Sun’s out, gun’s out is how the ancient proverb goes, and Albert Park has one of the better workout temples in Melbourne at the ready. The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, affectionally known as MSAC, has something for every type of exercise you might be after.

Pumping iron or wanting to get on the treadmill? Its large gym has you covered. Indoor and outdoor pools for morning laps? Check. Wanting to buck Allen Iverson’s thoughts on the matter and get some basketball practise in? A multitude of courts are available for shooting hoops.

Add in table tennis tables, badminton and squash courts, and MSAC is a Melbourne sport landmark – the perfect place for your morning workout.

After that’s done, you’ve earned some breakfast and as luck would have it, the Carousel Café is close by with its all-day breakfast. Regardless of whether you want to go something fresh like an acai bowl, some seasonal fruit with granola, or want to fill up on some chilli scrambled eggs, this Albert Park highlight has something for everyone.

12:30 pm – Checking out some art and some lunch

If you’re wanting to scratch your arts and cultural itch, it’s hard to go past Gasworks Arts Park. This arts precinct is great to visit in summer, whether you’re riding solo or you’re coming with family.

The Gasworks park showcases a large number of public sculptures, while you can also pop into the Showcase Studio to see someone like Rebecca Garfield and her work. Gasworks also holds a great Kids Holiday Program to let your young ones explore their creative side. Or, if fresh produce is more your style, the art precinct hosts a large Farmers’ Market each month, which is always a nice day out.

For a bite to eat, the Priscilla Jones café at Gasworks will cure your hunger with ease. Go for the delicious chicken leek burger or even their excellent BLAT, alongside fresh juices and house-made pastries.

2:30 pm – Walk alongside or sail on Albert Park Lake

You can’t come to Albert Park and miss the iconic lake, especially on a gorgeous summer’s day. One of the more picturesque and popular walking spots, Albert Park Lake is a perfect spot to stroll around at your leisure, or jump on your bike for a nice ride.

If you fancy something new, why not try learning to sail across the lake? The Albert Park Yacht Club runs Learn To Sail classes until the 16th of December, and it’s a great way to pick up a different skill in idyllic conditions.

6 pm – Finish your day with a delicious meal and selection of drinks

After such an action-packed day, you’re going to be starving, and thankfully Albert Park has plenty of delicious dinner options. Misuzu’s plays host to some of Port Phillip’s best Japanese food. With excellent sushi and sashimi options, or mouthwatering sukiyaki beef, it’s hard to go past Misuzu’s offerings.

If you’re after something a little more casual but no less excellent, Andrew’s Hamburgers have achieved cult status for their classic burgers. As old school as they come – back when fish and chip shop burgers were more prevalent than brioche buns and maple bacon – Andrew’s is a Melbourne institution, just off Ferrars Street.

To finish off your day with your favourite tipple, the Vincent is a great example of a Melbourne pub balancing the old and new with great success. With an excellent wine selection and beer offerings including Furphy, Hawthorn and Panhead, the Vincent covers whatever you might be thirsty for.

This explores just one type of day you might want to have during summer in Albert Park, but there’s so much more to do. We keep scouring the City of Port Phillip to find out the latest and greatest events, arts and culture activities, or places to eat and drink.
