Beachside brews and bites at Republica

When it comes St Kilda bars, it’s hard to find one more iconic than Republica. Close to St Kilda beach, you can essentially swim right up to the venue for a drink or bite to eat. Talking to owner Angela Dawson, it’s clear that Republica occupies a unique and convenient location for St Kilda locals and travellers from all origins.

Republica St Kilda

A courtyard for the people

Without doubt, Republica’s number one highlight is the location. Being so close to the water, it’s easy for beach-goers to refuel after a swim. Alternatively, Republica gives a perfect environment for those who want to kick back in a hanging chair with their favourite tipple. You can even bring your favourite four-legged friend along to the pet-friendly courtyard.

Dawson is proud of Republica’s great crowd that it attracts throughout the 364 days they’re open (only closing on Christmas Day), with many drawn to their attractive outdoor area.

“It’s the place people love to gather over a few drinks and shared plates, to listen to live music – performed every day over summer. Made for socialising and creating memories in the sun, our courtyard really is ‘for the people’,” Dawson says.

Republica St Kilda

An atmosphere enhanced by Modern Australian fare

While a great location, Republica doesn’t rest on its laurels, providing a great selection of meals for those looking for some sharing options to accompany drinks, or for a larger main meal.

For starters, delicious salt and pepper calamari with smoked garlic aioli or tuna carpaccio are perfect to accompany a pint of Carlton Draught or can of Balter XPA.

If you’re in the mood for something larger, Republica’s chargrilled rump with potato galette and watercress delights the palate, alongside a delicious BBQ swordfish with braised greens.

These mains go down nicely with a wine from a list that features local and international options, as well as classic cocktails and speciality selections (from Republica’s experienced bar staff). Our cocktail pick? The Southside: mixing dry gin, lime, sugar nectar and fresh mint, for a refreshing beachside beverage.

With a menu also featuring fantastic prawn and nduja pizzas, alongside sweet treats like a salted caramel parfait — Republica really has it all.

Weekly specials

With a Monday to Friday happy hour offering $8 pints of Carlton and $5 house wines, Republica is a great place for a picturesque knock off drink.

If a midweek bite is more your preference, $15 pizzas on a Monday, $15 fish and chips on a Tuesday is a great bargain, alongside $3 oysters to kick off your Friday.

Check out what other specials Republica has on offer, from Monday until the weekend.

Part of the St Kilda culture

Seeing themselves as “St Kilda’s very own backyard”, Dawson and Republica occupy a proud fixture in the St Kilda and Port Phillip community, where they praise the culture as “one of a kind”.

“It really makes you feel as if you’re on a holiday, even if you’re a local. We love our community and in return we have an amazing crowd who return because of the good times they have here,” Dawson says.
