We all know that living in Melbourne means many a rainy day to look forward to, but just because an afternoon at the beach isn’t an option doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of ways to enjoy wet weather. If you’re looking for things to do in St. Kilda and you’re getting down from the downpour, check out some of these indoor activities in the area that will keep you warm and lift your spirit.

Head to a movie at the Astor Theatre
1 Chapel St, St Kilda VIC 3182
There is nothing more quintessential than watching a good movie on a rainy day, except perhaps watching a cult classic revival in a magnificent 1930’s single-screen cinema, such as the Astor Theatre. While the building itself has almost a century of history, the technology and facilities are state-of-the art. Sit back in the comfy leather seats as the golden curtains move aside for a showing of an original Superman restoration, The Big Lebowski, or a 35mm Wes Anderson classic. In true theater fashion you can line up for drinks and hot snacks before the show and enjoy the soft rain on the windows from inside the lush foyer. The Astor is a definite must to cure any rainy day blues in St. Kilda. Check out showtimes here.

Have a beer and listen to live music at The Fifth Province
3/60 Fitzroy St, St Kilda VIC 3182
If a cosy, Irish style pub with vintage decor sounds like the perfect rainy afternoon, head to the Fifth Province to check out what they have going on tap. Go anytime between Wednesday and Sunday and you can expect quality live music to start from 5pm, the perfect end to a rainy day spent at the movies and yoga class. The pub is right near the 96 tram line to get you home if you live north of the city and you decide to have a few. Before 5pm you can still order from their breakfast menu, but even the bar menu has comforting options like boiled eggs, hot chips, or chicken wings later on. Check out their events and gig-guide next time you’re stuck inside on a grey day.
Have a hot drink with a view at St. Kilda Pier Kiosk
Pier Rd, St Kilda VIC 3182
Maybe a cafe with a seaside view isn’t what you think of on a rainy afternoon in St. Kilda, but there’s something rather poetic about being tucked inside with a hot drink, watching the rain fall into the ocean. You can choose from a good ol’ coffee or chai tea, or go for a turmeric latte or a matcha to spice things up. If you’re feeling a little bit indulgent, you might even try to nutella hot chocolate with crushed peanuts! They cater to all kinds of dietary choices with milk options like soy, almond, and coconut, or your standard cow’s milk. All drinks can be upgraded to a large mug for an extra dollar. For those who love a good pot of tea while rain splatters against the window, they have all the old favourites like Earl Grey, Malabar chai, Green, Chamomile, or a spicier Lemongrass and ginger. Check out the full menu here.
